Alan Shefman
Alan Shefman has been involved with community service as both as a volunteer and professional throughout his career, culminating in 2004 when he was elected as Councillor, Ward 5 – Thornhill for the City of Vaughan. He was re-elected four times, serving his community for 18 years.
After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from York and his Master of Arts degree in Canadian Studies from Carleton University, Alan moved to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories where he worked in the Department of Local Government on a variety of issues including municipal governance and infrastructure development.
Returning to Toronto, Shefman served as B’nai Brith Canada’s National Director of the League for Human Rights. He then went on to work as Director of Communications and Education at the Ontario Human Rights Commission before launching his firm, Edge Quality/Communications Consultants, a human rights and communications consulting firm.
In 2000 he was elected as a Trustee for the York Region District School Board. This was followed by his election to Vaughan Council where he was a strong advocate at the city on all matters relating to the development of transit, environmental matters, waste management and accountability and transparency in the operation of municipal government. He has worked closely with the development industry in one of the fastest growing municipalities in Canada.
