Dave Levac
Principal
Dave Levac has the distinction of being Ontario’s longest serving Speaker of the Legislative Assembly until his retirement in 2018. Levac, who represented the riding of Brant from 1999 to 2018 has served in various capacities prior to being elected Speaker including Chief Government Whip, followed by Parliamentary Assistant for Community Safety and Correctional Services and then Public Assistant for Energy and infrastructure.
During his career at Queen’s Park, Levac has the distinction of passing several Private Members’ Bills including Smoke Free Amendment Act (first co- sponsored bill by two different parties), the Firefighters Memorial Day Act, and Sabrina’s Law. Locally, he was instrumental in getting GO bus service to Brantford, the construction of the Wayne Gretzky Sports Centre and the expansion of Wilfred Laurier University’s Brantford campus to name just a few.
Internationally, Levac has been a member of and led delegations to the Council of Commonwealth Governments, US Council of State Governments (CSG), and La Francophonie. He was also responsible for concluding several Friendship Agreements with other countries.
Prior to elected office, Levac started his professional career as an elementary school teacher where he was credited with introducing and implementing an award winning conflict resolution program for students. He was named an Ontario English Catholic Teachers Association (OECTA) Distinguished Teacher in 1994.
Levac’s civic involvement has been recognized with the Canada 125 Medal, Brantford’s Citizen of the Year in 1997, the Queen Elizabeth II Golden Jubilee Medal in 2002, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. In addition, he has been awarded the Ontario Service Award, the YMCA Peace Medal and the inaugural Joseph Brant Award from the Robert Land Academy. He holds the Order of Merit from the Ukrainian President for his work on the Holodomor Memorial Day Act.
Dave and his wife, Rosemarie, continue to live in Brant. They have 3 adult children.
